The Waste Initiatives installation team was fantastic, ensuring that they mobilised the site efficiently and safely.

Paul Rosenberg Vella | Director and Co-Founder

Problem: Inadequate segregation of C&I/C&D waste

Revert Group, a company specialising in the fit-out and refurbishment sector of commercial and industrial waste (C&I), faced a critical challenge in efficiently managing their waste streams at their facility in Brooklyn, Victoria. With a diverse range of materials generated from their operations, including construction and demolition (C&D) waste, they struggled to segregate and recycle these materials effectively. The lack of a sophisticated sorting system led to inefficiencies in their operations and resulted in a significant portion of waste being sent to landfill, contrary to their sustainability goals.

Solution: Installation of a commercial and industrial waste sorting line

Waste Initiatives addressed Revert Group’s challenges by installing a customised C&I/C&D sorting line, enabling the segregation of 16 types of waste materials. This tailored solution facilitated Revert Group’s goal of recycling 90% of its waste, significantly reducing its environmental impact and waste disposal costs.

Paul Rosenberg Vella, Director and Co-Founder of Revert Group, praised Waste Initiatives’ hands-on approach, particularly for focusing on safety and dust mitigation. Regular design meetings ensured effective communication and alignment with Revert Group’s recovery objectives. Additionally, Paul appreciated Waste Initiatives’ proactive attitude and commitment to safety during site mobilisation and project execution, which minimised operational risks.

In conclusion, the collaboration between Revert Group and Waste Initiatives exemplifies the successful integration of innovative waste management solutions to address complex challenges in the construction and refurbishment sector, ultimately leading to enhanced efficiency and sustainability in operations.

    Albury NSW

Highly recommend Waste Initiatives. We are on our second granulator from them, and it’s a beast. After-sales service is awesome with Jason. He needs a raise putting up with me.

    Adrian Keighran | Business Owner

    Challenge

4×4 Concepts, based in Albury NSW, manufacture custom-designed vehicle accessories that contain high volumes of (ABS) plastic parts. To avoid trim waste going to landfill and reducing waste disposal costs, Adrian Keighran contacted Waste Initiatives to find alternative recycling solutions.

Adrian realised that by buying his own recycling plant, he could also offer to process products from other industries, including councils in the surrounding areas.

His challenge was processing ABS offcuts up to one meter in size down to fine flakes, and if large pieces of plastic had to go straight into a granulator, it would cause heating issues.

    Solution

Waste Initiatives suggested a versatile shredding system with a single shaft shredder that shreds plastic materials into 30mm chips. It then feeds into a granulator and blower system for an output of 8mm granular flakes.

With the help of EPA funding and support from Waste Initiatives, Adrian could build a sound business case, and the project was able to commence.

This system can process high volumes of ABS and HDPE plastics. It can be used in multiple configurations to produce various outcomes of shredded chips or granular flakes that can be sold to recyclers for further processing.

      Australia Post

      Location:

      Challenge

An Australia Post parcel facility receiving bulk PP mail bags from international deliveries to the site was experiencing rising costs of waste disposal and loss of efficiency in managing high volumes of this waste type at a busy facility.

The challenging factor was finding the right solution for effectively handling and baling their bulky waste material to increase their sustainability.

      Solution

The Waste Initiatives team were engaged in recommending a solution to alleviate these challenges. After a consultation and design review, a high-force closed-door HX800 baler was recommended with a purpose-designed pre-crush ram that pushes the material down into the chamber to avoid jamming.

The processed bales are being sent to recycling facilities to avoid going to landfill.

The operators now experience efficient processing of their bulk bags and a dramatic reduction in waste transfers off the site – improving site safety and reducing costs.

…The baler is going great guns, operators are very pleased with it…

Alan Butler | Manager Water, Wastewater & Waste

        Challenge

Walcha Council operate a small recycling facility at their Waste Depot where cardboard and other recyclables are recovered from waste brought to the facility.

Council had an antiquated cardboard baler in place which was constantly deteriorating in both condition and performance.

This had resulted in operational costs disproportionate to the benefit the baler afforded the facility.

        Solution

Waste Initiatives were approached for advice on a suitable replacement baler for the facility.

After a brief consultation with Council staff and a site assessment to verify site conditions and placement, a HX400-38T semi-automatic closed-door baler was recommended as the ideal upgrade for the facility.

The high-force HX400 Baler ensures Walcha Council are able to not only process their cardboard volumes, but also a range of other recyclables including shredded paper, cans and bottles.

          Andy Thomas | Maintenance Manager

          Challenge

Skretting, a Nutreco company, is a world leader in the manufacture and supply of aquaculture feeds. In 2019 alone Skretting produced 21.5 million portions of seafood per day globally.

Skretting has production facilities in 18 countries on five continents, and manufactures and delivers high quality feeds from hatching to harvest for more than 60 species.

Operating a large processing plant in Cambridge, Tasmania, Skretting found themselves struggling with an increasing volume of bulk bags and a rapidly-deteriorating vertical baler which was fast becoming a WHS hazard as well as a labour-intensive bottleneck in their operations.

          Solution

After a period of consultative engagement with Waste Initiatives equipment specialists, the operations and commercial team at Skretting approved Waste Initiatives recommendation for a highly-automated, bespoke SC3000 Compactor and specialised loading bins to suit the site material handling equipment and the waste profile being fed into the compactor.

A special purpose hopper was designed & fitted with auto-start photocells fitted to enable the operators to feed the compactor and drive away with no need to leave their forklifts – a significant efficiency gain for the site.

            Challenge

Gunnedah Workshop Enterprises “Recyclit” division operate a Commingled Material Recycling Facility (MRF) in the NSW regional town of Gunnedah.

With the long transport distances to ports and metropolitan processors, Recyclit depend heavily on the performance of their container baler to maintain the viability of recycling their PET, HDPE and Aluminium separated in the MRF operation.

In 2020, it was established that the deteriorating baler on site was reaching a point of critical failure and the ongoing cost of maintenance was increasing. It was time for an upgrade.

            Solution

When approaching the market for proposals to replace the failing container baler, their site manager received a recommendation to engage Waste Initiatives as the market leader in this field.

After a comprehensive assessment of the site layout, feed method and performance requirements, the WastePac HX400-38T Horizontal Baler was selected as the best suited machine.

Waste Initiatives had to consider the existing triple hopper infeed system – a challenge to fit in with the vertical closed-door mechanism. Our installation technicians safely ensured this was managed without incident, resulting in a successful installation – on time and on budget.

              Challenge

A well-known hardware retailer was looking to replace their current balers in almost a hundred stores nationwide. They contacted Waste Initiatives to discuss options that would best suit their needs.

Cardboard and film waste being the primary issue, balers with the correct specification were the main focus and providing they would fit into confined storage spaces. Other criteria were to have a baler that would be easy to operate and maintained by staff members.

These balers had to be installed nationwide over a specific timeframe and serviced on an annual basis.

              Solution

Waste initiatives supplied just short of 200 WastePac 300LH and 60 balers to stores across Australia. The 300LH for the cardboard waste and the 60 for the plastic film.

The WastePac 60 Baler is a small scale baler commonly used for small to medium volumes of plastics and cardboard waste and the perfect choice for limited space.

The WastePac 300 Low Height Baler suits high volume cardboard waste accepting large boxes whole, eliminating any need to cut down prior to compaction, saving operator time.

Ideally nestled in the heart of Hillsdale, on Bunnerong Road, Southpoint Shopping Centre provides convenience, a variety of quality fresh food operators, cafe, beauty and health, fashion and service retailers along with a food court. It also boasts a full-line Woolworths, Aldi, TK Maxx, Chemist Warehouse and over 25 specialty stores.

Remondis were engaged by Southpoint Shopping Centre to supply waste services for the centre. Space being at a premium, the waste consolidation zone was very restricted in both available footprint and access.

Increasing general waste and cardboard waste streams were becoming a significant challenge.

                Solution

Remondis turned to Waste Initiatives as their equipment specialist for recommendation of a compact solution to manage the increasing general waste and cardboard volumes the site was generating.

After a site assessment and detailed measure- up was completed, Waste Initiatives equipment specialists recommended a high-force 15m3 RP30 waste compactor & bin lifter combination for the general waste, and a special purpose APS1100 Roto-Compactor for the cardboard waste stream.

The installation was an overwhelming success, freeing up additional space and reducing the centre’s cost of waste managment thanks to the high bin payloads of up to 10T!

We contacted Waste Initiatives to discuss options to reduce our waste that we were sending to landfill and find a sustainable long-term solution. The salesman worked with us to come up with a system that would separate the organics from packaging while generating an 8 month payback. The system has exceeded itself to date by paying for itself more than 5 times over. The overall sales experience from start to finish was very pleasing.

                  Matthew Edmund

                  Challenge

Ninety nine percent of Masterfoods Australia products are manufactured at their site in Berkeley Vale, with many of their ingredients sourced from Australian suppliers and local Australian farmers. Masterfoods are passionate about finding more sustainable long-term solutions and they have taken steps to reduce their footprint by recycling water, reducing their waste to landfill, using recycled packaging materials and in the co-generation of their own electricity.

In 2016 Masterfoods approached Waste Initiatives looking for a solution to reduce the volume of waste at their site as they had an excess of packaged food product which was going to landfill.

                  Solution

The Waste Initiatives sales team went to site and inspected their operations to get a clearer picture of the type of system that would be suitable for their requirements. A custom designed product destruction unit was recommended as it was able to separate the organics (sauces, raw ingredients, finished products) from a range of packaging materials (from sachets through to 20L ingredient buckets).

The System was installed in early 2017 and has enabled Masterfoods to divert the organics from landfill and generated a 4 month financial payback. The system is saving the company approximately $800 per day and they have also said that it has paid for itself more than 5 times over.

The system allowed the customer to be able to recover expired milk from its containers with sufficient quality and purity to be saleable to livestock producers and also recover saleable recyclable packaging free from milk residue to sell to plastic recyclers.

                      Challenge

Lion is one of Australasia’s largest food and beverage companies, employing over 7,000 people across Australia and New Zealand.

Their milk processing division in Queensland contacted Waste Initiatives to discuss options for a system to separate expired milk products from the recyclable containers enabling them to sell the milk to livestock producers and sell the recyclable plastic to a recycler.

The plastic containers would need to have the uncontaminated liquid extracted, whilst washing the containers and packaging them for collection by the recycler.

Their current production needed to continue while this process was in action.

                      Solution

Waste Initiatives supplied a system that would shred the full containers and release the milk draining it through a strainer into a stainless steel receival tank below, to then be pumped out for transport.

The shredded containers were conveyed via a screw auger fitted with internal water jets with sufficient flow to wash the shredded plastic but not dilute the milk unduly.

These washings also drained into the stainless- steel tank below. The shredded plastic exiting the screw conveyor was baled in a WastePac twin chamber baler so that production could continue while full bales were being tied off.

Braeden O’Grady | Facilities and Maintenance

                        Challenge

Tru Blu Beverages is the largest manufacturer of contract-packed beverages sold through Australian supermarkets.

In 2019 an Australian beverage manufacturing and distribution company in Sydney were looking for a way to recycle their rejected bottles which still contained the beverage inside the plastic bottle.

The extraction of the liquid and compacting the plastic bottles to be ready for recycling collection was the companies main focus for their inquiry.

                        Solution

Waste Initiatives found the solution by custom building an Automatic De-Watering and Bailing System which automatically de-waters and bales the PET bottles into a compact bale, minimising waste and post production time.

The overall investment into this system will reduce waste collection costs whilst also increasing efficiency in the day to day running of the business with less manual handling.

The company had planned for a 2 year payback for the system and have mentioned that it is now looking at under 18 months.
