Overview
The Panizzolo KRAKEN 2300 is a high-capacity pre-shredder designed specifically for the volumetric reduction of heavy and bulky metal scrap.
Using two slow-speed, high-torque toothed shafts, the KRAKEN tears and reduces incoming scrap to create a more consistent output suitable for subsequent grinding. When integrated upstream of a Panizzolo MEGA hammer mill, this controlled reduction helps prepare difficult material and maximise hammer mill productivity.
Designed for intensive, high-volume processing, the KRAKEN can handle vehicles and car parts, aluminium profiles, mixed metals, bulky scrap and other challenging metal streams. Its heavy-duty construction, hydraulic drive and configurable processing software allow torque and shaft speed to be controlled according to the material being processed.
The KRAKEN can be incorporated into a complete Panizzolo metal recovery facility or introduced as a dedicated pre-shredding stage within a larger processing operation.
Heavy-Duty Pre-Shredding for Metal Scrap

The KRAKEN is designed for demanding scrap streams where controlled volumetric reduction is required before further processing.

Low-Speed, High-Torque Processing
The KRAKEN uses two toothed shafts to tear and reduce scrap rather than relying on high-speed impact.
The hydraulic system allows the shafts to operate between approximately 2.5 and 10 rpm, combining low rotational speed with high crushing torque for the controlled reduction of difficult metal scrap.
Pressure transducers monitor the shafts and allow torque and speed to be managed according to processing conditions. This gives the control system the ability to adapt machine operation to different incoming materials.
Designed to Feed MEGA Hammer Mills
One of the most important roles of the KRAKEN is preparing heavy scrap for subsequent hammer milling.
The toothed shafts tear and volumetrically reduce incoming material to create an output suitable for downstream grinding. Panizzolo specifically identifies the KRAKEN as compatible with the MEGA hammer mills.

Heavy or bulky scrap → KRAKEN pre-shredding → MEGA hammer milling → metal separation and refining
The KRAKEN performs the initial volumetric reduction, while the hammer mill provides the more intensive grinding and liberation required to prepare metals for subsequent separation.
Pre-processing heavy and bulky scrap before hammer milling also forms part of Panizzolo’s approach to reducing processing risks associated with feeding uncontrolled material directly into the downstream hammer mill.
Heavy-Duty Shaft Construction
The drive shafts are manufactured from 39NiCrMo3 special steel, selected to provide the strength required for demanding scrap processing.
The central body incorporates cleaners designed to assist material passage through the machine and concentrate the processing area around the shafts. Side access and walkways are protected against falling material to provide safer access around the equipment.
Hydraulic Drive and Intelligent Control
The KRAKEN incorporates a closed-loop hydraulic system with a variable-displacement pump and electronically controlled motor.
Pressure transducers provide control over shaft torque and speed, while Panizzolo’s software allows operating parameters to be managed using predefined processing recipes. These recipes can be customised or created specifically around different incoming scrap streams.
Operators can also use a remote control to select recipes programmed into the machine software.
Designed for Intensive Operation
The KRAKEN has been engineered for large quantities of material and intensive processing conditions.
Its epicyclic gear reducers are sized around the machine’s workload and designed to withstand stress peaks and demanding operating conditions. Dedicated heat sinks help manage heat accumulation during operation.
The main machine structure uses S355J2 structural steel, supporting the durability required for heavy scrap processing.
Designed for Easier Maintenance
For equipment operating under heavy loads, maintenance access has been incorporated into the KRAKEN’s design.
A quick-release system allows the shafts to be disconnected from the reducers, while bearing supports are designed to prevent the accumulation of dirt and contaminants. These features are intended to simplify shaft maintenance and replacement while supporting machine longevity and productivity.
For a high-throughput scrap processing operation, this is commercially important because access time and maintenance requirements directly influence plant availability.
Optional Volumetric Reduction Bar
An additional volumetric reduction bar can be installed underneath the shredding chamber.
The bar provides greater material reduction where required and is particularly suited to loose materials such as ferrous scrap and light aluminium.
This provides another means of adapting the KRAKEN around the incoming material and required downstream output.
Hydraulic Cooling for Hot Operating Environments
Panizzolo also offers an optional hydraulic cooling system designed for operation in high ambient temperatures.
The closed-loop water cooling system is designed to maintain stable hydraulic oil temperatures in environments reaching up to 55°C, protecting the hydraulic system from high external temperatures.
