The Panizzolo FLEX Series is a range of stationary electric hammer mills designed for grinding and liberating valuable metals from mixed scrap, WEEE, electric motors, aluminium and other metal-rich waste streams, with models offering processing capacities up to 15 tonnes per hour.
Overview
The Panizzolo FLEX Series is a range of stationary hammer mills developed specifically for metal and scrap processing. Available in four models, the FLEX range provides processing capacities from up to 4.5 tonnes per hour with the Flex 500 through to 15 tonnes per hour with the Flex 1300, allowing the hammer mill to be selected around the material stream, required throughput and wider recovery process.
Rather than simply reducing the size of scrap, the hammer milling stage is designed to grind and liberate metals so they can be more effectively separated and recovered downstream. The FLEX Series can be installed as a standalone processing machine or integrated with magnetic, eddy current, air, screening and advanced sorting technologies as part of a broader metal recovery plant.
Panizzolo designs its hammer mills specifically around scrap grinding, with particular attention given to processing efficiency, structural strength, maintenance access and the balance between operating costs and the commercial value of recovered materials.
Flexible Processing Across Different Scrap Streams

A major advantage of the FLEX Series is its ability to process different metal-rich waste streams. The machine configuration, cradle and grids can be selected according to the incoming material and required treatment cycle.
Suitable materials include:
- Mixed ferrous and non-ferrous metals
- WEEE and WEEE-derived material
- Electric motors
- Electric transformers
- Mixed aluminium casings
- Aluminium plate and mixed profiles
- Aluminium tins
- Iron tins and tinplate
- Ferrous metals contaminated with plastics
- Metal fractions derived from combustion processes

*Maximum productivity figures supplied by Panizzolo. Actual throughput will depend on the material being processed and machine configuration.
Flex 500: compact entry into stationary hammer milling, up to 4.5 t/h.
Flex 800: increased throughput up to 8 t/h with a 160 kW drive.
Flex 1000: heavier-duty processing with a substantially larger rotor and up to 11 t/h.
Flex 1300: highest-capacity FLEX model, offering up to 15 t/h while retaining a 315 kW motor.
Patented Interchangeable Cradle
At the centre of the FLEX Series’ processing flexibility is Panizzolo’s patented interchangeable cradle.
The cradle is a key part of the grinding process and allows the mill configuration to be adapted to different materials and treatment requirements. Configuration changes can be completed in less than 20 minutes, supporting faster changeovers when an operation needs to process different scrap streams.
Cradles, grids and armour can be configured according to the material and treatment cycle, with modular and interchangeable grids designed for straightforward setup and removal.
Engineered for Scrap Grinding
Unlike a general-purpose shredder adapted to metal processing, the FLEX Series has been designed specifically around scrap grinding.
Heavy-Duty Rotor
Panizzolo internally engineers its rotors to facilitate material intake and the grinding of heavier scrap. The design incorporates dedicated bearing supports, a special cast double pulley and a mill casing coupling system designed around the stresses generated during metal processing.
Purpose-Designed Hammers
The cast hammers are designed to balance impact force, strength, hardness and wear resistance. They rotate freely through 360 degrees and were developed in cooperation with the University of Padua and specialist Italian foundries.
Panizzolo reports 13,000 hours of hammer durability during mixed scrap iron treatment.
Controlled Material Flow
In-house-designed eccentrics are installed on the loading and unloading tables to create balanced movement and distribution of material through the system. This provides greater control over incoming and outgoing material flows during processing.
Reduced Environmental Vibration
The FLEX mills incorporate vibration dampers between the machine and supporting structure. According to Panizzolo, these absorb approximately 80% of the vibration generated by the mill, helping reduce vibration transferred into the surrounding environment.
Electric Operation and Energy Efficiency
The FLEX Series uses fixed electric drives ranging from 110 kW to 315 kW depending on the model.
Panizzolo’s engineering approach is focused on balancing energy consumption with production capacity, with the aim of increasing hourly productivity for the available energy input and improving the profitability of processed metals.
Designed for Maintenance and Changeovers
Maintenance has also been considered as part of the FLEX design. Panizzolo’s design policy specifically focuses on speeding up and simplifying inspection and maintenance activities.
Available equipment includes a dedicated maintenance trolley for routine electrical and mechanical maintenance, while the interchangeable cradle and modular grids simplify access and configuration changes.
Available Equipment and Integration
Depending on the application and required output, a FLEX hammer mill can form part of a larger processing system incorporating technologies such as:
Magnetic separation
Eddy current separation
Zig-zag air separation
Dynamic separation
Screening
X-ray sorting
Metal sensors
Densimetric separation
Optical sorting
This modular approach means an operator can invest in an individual hammer mill or develop a broader processing plant, with additional technologies introduced as processing requirements evolve.
Optional Soundproofing
Dedicated soundproofing is available for stationary FLEX hammer mills. Panizzolo’s system uses self-supporting galvanised steel panels incorporating soundproofing material, including 100 mm vertical panels containing water-repellent acoustic material.
Why Choose a Panizzolo FLEX Hammer Mill?
The FLEX Series is particularly suited to scrap processors looking for a fixed electric hammer mill that can process multiple metal-rich waste streams while providing a pathway to greater downstream separation and recovery.
With four models spanning up to 4.5 to 15 tonnes per hour, operators can select a machine around their current throughput requirements without needing to create a completely different processing philosophy as capacity grows. The interchangeable cradle, modular processing equipment and ability to integrate downstream separation technologies also provide flexibility as incoming materials or recovery requirements change.
Panizzolo equipment can be supplied as an individual machine or incorporated into a complete engineered metal recovery system, supported by local application advice, engineering, commissioning and after-sales service.
